ST. JOSEPH ACADEMY REUNION
C-T August 4, 2016
Alumni and friends of St. Joseph Academy, a Catholic High School which opened in Chillicothe in 1871, celebrated with a reunion Saturday at Bishop Hogan Memorial School on Saturday. Shown here are individuals who attended the academy. The school closed its doors in 1969 and students who were freshmen, sophomores and juniors, had to continue their high school career at Chillicothe High School or elsewhere.

An estimated 85 people attended, coming from as far away as
The Villages in Florida, Arizona, Texas and North Carolina, as well as several from the Kansas City area. Classes represented ranged from 1940 to 1969. Also attending were individuals who were underclassmen in 1969 who graduated elsewhere. According to history provided by former academy student, David Martin, the academy was founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph, who came to Chillicothe in January 1871. Amid numerous difficulties and deprivations, these nuns began their work. School opened the following month in the old Redding house, which also served as the
Sisters' residence. A new building was ready for occupancy in January 1872. This was the original St. Joseph Academy which, at that time, had a large enrollment of resident and day students. The constantly increasing enrollment soon demanded more spacious accommodations than what the academy offered. An addition was built, consisting of a studio, refectory and kitchen on the lower floor. In 1904, a new academy building was erected. In 1907, electricity was installed,
and the sidewalks were completed. The alumni association was formed in 1898 and joined the Missouri Federation of Catholic Alumnae in 1915. St. Joseph Academy was admitted as a fully-accredited secondary school by the University of Missouri in 1921. In 1935, the Sisters of St. Joseph said farewell to the school they had built and maintained for 63 years. They were succeeded by the Sisters of St. Francis.
The Alumni's Saturday evening activities began with a social gathering, followed by a dinner provided by Melanie Martin, of Roll With It catering.
